Why was Maitreya appointed as the next Buddha by Shakyamuni?

To "save the world from lawlessness." Maitreya in Buddhism is the equivalent of the Hebrew idea of a messiah; and just as in the Hebrew vs. Christian traditions, there are some Buddhists who believe this savior has already come, and some who do not.
