Buddhism and drugs history of the buddha?

i can understand why buddhists are advised against drugs and alcohol because of keeping a clear mind. but i would like to know if there is any evidence of drugs being experimented with within buddhism. i know that the buddha tried other things before finally becoming enlightened and that he did not have the answers right away, during the 6 years he spent practicing other techniques trying to become enlightened were drugs used then? i was just wondering because i cant find any evidence of it at all but surely it must have been tried at some point in order to rule it out?
